Advanced Life Support for Dentists
- The frequency of dental office medical emergencies is increasing,
- the emergency preparation of the Dentist is the most critical factor in how well the dental team responds to the increasing number of medical emergencies, and
- Existing courses such as Basic Life Support (BLS) are not designed specifically for the dental profession and thus do not totally prepare the Dentist and their team to respond effectively to a medical emergency. This course will serve as a complement to BLS.

ALSD will prepare you and your entire team to keep patients safe when that inevitable office emergency occurs, especially when you (the dentist) might not be in the office.
This module has been developed to assist Dentists to identify and respond to medical emergencies. The material used to develop this module is a compilation from various texts, literature and the clinical experience of the author. It is designed to be concise and emphasize the most likely emergency situations. The module should be considered a useful companion and act as a guide for the structured review of medical emergencies. This publication contains information you should already be familiar with and have common knowledge due to various classes taken during your training at your respective dental school. It should be noted that adverse outcomes and death may result even if an emergency is treated correctly. However, education and preparation will optimize the chances of a favorable result.
ALSD consists of Nine Modules and Self-Instruction Guide centered on patient safety and medical/sedation emergency preparedness. Upon completion of the Nine Modules, the DENTIST will receive an Instruction Guide which they can use in the dental office for a “hands on” participatory course with all current team members in that dental office. ALSD is a two-year renewal program.

- Each module will be worth 1 hour of CE. If all nine modules are completed, the dentist will receive 9 hours of CE.
- 24 Mock Medical Emergency Drills have been developed. For each drill completed, the Dentist will receive one hour of CE through Goldman Dental Management. This gives the Dentist 24 hours of CE. A different mock emergency drill will be presented live through a webinar each month giving one hour of CE to participants.
