CBCT in Clinical Dentistry

Oral Diagnosis, Endodontics, and Implant Planning

This course will begin with an overview of the fundamental principles of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), including the formation of three-dimensional images, appropriate examination selection and prescription, and strategies to maximize the diagnostic benefits of this valuable imaging technology.

The course will then explore three-dimensional hard-tissue anatomy and soft-tissue calcifications of the head and neck, emphasizing their radiographic identification and potential significance in the diagnosis of orofacial pathology.

Participants will subsequently review the radiographic features of a broad spectrum of osseous lesions, including common and uncommon entities that may be encountered on CBCT examinations. Emphasis will be placed on distinguishing normal anatomic variations from pathologic findings, recognizing features suggestive of benign and malignant disease, and determining appropriate clinical management and referral.

Endodontic applications of CBCT will be discussed, including its role in evaluating complex root canal anatomy, investigating endodontic disease, resolving diagnostic challenges, and supporting treatment planning when conventional imaging is insufficient.

The clinical section of the course will focus on implant planning using CBCT scans and software to preview implant sites and obtain surgical guides.

Throughout the course, participants will develop a systematic approach to CBCT interpretation that supports appropriate imaging decisions, improved diagnostic confidence, and optimal patient care.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Apply the fundamental principles of CBCT imaging to understand three-dimensional image formation, appropriate examination selection, and optimization of diagnostic image quality.

  • Select and prescribe appropriate radiographic examinations based on the patient’s clinical presentation, diagnostic needs, and the principles of radiation protection.

  • Identify normal three-dimensional hard-tissue anatomy and soft-tissue calcifications of the head and neck and recognize their potential clinical significance.

  • Differentiate normal anatomic structures and variations from pathologic findings on CBCT examinations.

  • Recognize and describe the radiographic features of odontogenic and non-odontogenic osseous lesions, including findings that may suggest benign or malignant disease.

  • Develop an appropriate clinical management and referral strategy based on CBCT findings and the suspected nature of the lesion.

  • Explain the clinical applications and limitations of CBCT in endodontics, including its role in diagnosis, assessment of complex root canal anatomy, evaluation of endodontic pathology, and treatment planning.

  • Use CBCT imaging and implant-planning software to evaluate implant sites, assess relevant anatomic structures and available bone, and perform virtual implant positioning.

  • Explain the principles of CBCT-guided implant planning and surgical guide fabrication, including the role of digital planning in transferring the virtual implant position to the clinical setting.

Steven R. Singer, DDS, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. He graduated from New York University College of Dentistry in 1982 and practiced general dentistry for over 25 years while teaching Oral Radiology. He first taught at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine before moving to Rutgers. In 2010, he became a full-time faculty member at Rutgers. Additionally, he is an International Professor at the Sibar Institute of Dental Sciences in Guntur, India. Dr. Singer has co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications and 180 abstracts. He has presented at national and international meetings and delivered numerous continuing education courses. He serves on several editorial boards and as an ad hoc reviewer for multiple journals, including Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA), Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (DMFR), Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology (OOOO), Quintessence International, and the Journal of Orofacial Sciences. He also holds leadership roles in several professional organizations and is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.

In addition to overseeing administrative tasks that help the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine run smoothly, he takes pride in leading a diverse and dedicated faculty, providing support for didactic and clinical programs, research, and patient service. He enjoys classroom and clinical teaching, encouraging and supporting research efforts of pre- and postdoctoral students, and presenting continuing education to his colleagues.
