Mastering Adult Minimal Sedation
This continuum offers instruction in all aspects of adult minimal sedation to include nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation and oral sedation, as well as effective methods in dealing with anxiety control in general practice. Participants will learn various techniques and will be given a comprehensive review on current equipment, monitors and protocols.
- Module 1
Module 1 focuses on adult minimal oral sedation and satisfies any Board or College requirement for 7 hours of continuing education for recertification in this modality. In many cases this program also qualifies for recertification in moderate sedation.
- Module 2 & 3
Modules 2 and 3 are designed to achieve certification in nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalational sedation.
- Module 1, 2, & 3
Combined, Modules 1, 2 and 3 satisfy the requirements for those States and Provincial Dental Boards and Colleges who require 21 hours of continuing education to certify for combined inhalation and oral sedation adult minimal sedation.
Each of these individual Modules are specifically designed to meet the criteria, standards and guidelines of the American Dental Association, the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia, the Alberta Dental Association and College, Royal College (Ontario), the Association of the Canadian Faculties of Dentistry, and many other regulatory Boards for the teaching and administration of nitrous-oxide and oral sedation. Additional adaptations are made for licensed practitioners from other States and Provinces.
Our faculty specializes in adult learning by utilizing a multimedia approach which enhances knowledge and retention. Participants will learn various techniques and protocols designed to achieve certification in nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation as well as competency in providing oral anxiolysis (minimal sedation). A patient-centered approach to care is emphasized with lectures on appropriate medication section, monitoring and practical emergency management. Case studies will augment the delivery of key points and a problem-based learning approach is encouraged so that each participant’s questions are addressed. Our clinicians continue to provide these important modalities to their patients in daily practice, teach, do research and are well published in textbooks and the peer-reviewed literature on these subjects. These master educators differentiate our program from any other on this subject.

Mastering Adult Minimal Sedation Review
A Permit Renewal Course
This interactive lecture course is designed for dentists and hygienists who want to meet provincial and state dental board requirements to maintain anesthesia permit levels for minimal, and in some cases moderate, adult sedation. This one-day review course will refresh and give participants the most current information in how to comprehend and apply the benefits of oral/inhalation sedation within the dental office setting. This course will also review how to effectively deal with medical emergencies in the dental office for sedated and non-sedated patients.
- Objectives
- Develop a plan for every sedation appointment to ensure safe and effective minimal enteral sedation.
- Understand the pharmacology of oral sedatives and identify the most appropriate agent for each patient (the right drug at the right dose, for the right patient and the right procedure).
- Employ strategies to appropriately mitigate patient anxiety to include patient management and pharmacological methods.
- Review patient monitoring thoroughly—from Pulse Oximetry to Bispectral Index Analysis (BIS).
- Learn new techniques for administering medicatoins (agonists and antagonists) and proven strategies for patient who may require alternative approaches for success.
Mastering Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Inhalational Sedation
A Permitting Course
(Must complete Module 3 also)
This is an interactive lecture and hands-on participation course. It is designed for dentists and hygienists who desire to meet provincial and state dental board requirements for administering nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation to the dental patient. Traditionally this is a two day, how-to course that prepares participants to gain competency and apply the benefits of inhalation sedation within the dental office setting and to effectively deal with medical emergencies in the dental office for sedated and non-sedated patients. In our virtual format participants can learn at their own pace and once all of the programs are successfully completed, there is an opportunity for a didactic, hand-on portion with our instructors at the dental school (dates are variable).
- Objectives
- Learn how to select appropriate patients for inhalational and minimal sedation. Know who to treat and who to refer.
- Make pharmacology clinically useful through understanding of bioavailability, half-life and other pharmacokinetic principles.
- Examine inhalational equipment and learn various inhalational sedation techniques.
- Discuss the advantages/disadvantages and indications/contraindications of inhalational sedation with nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation.
- Recognize the importance of monitoring equipment and how to appropriately utilize monitors and chart findings.
Mastering Minimal Sedation
A Permitting Course
(Must complete Module 1, 2, & 3 also)
This is the Module of our interactive lecture and hands-on participation and certification course. It is designed for dentists and hygienists who desire to meet provincial and state dental board requirements for administering nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation to the dental patient (requires completion of Module 2 also). For those attendees looking to master adult minimal sedation to include both inhalational and oral sedation, completion of Module 1 and Module 2 is also required. In our virtual format participants can learn at their own pace and once all of the programs are successfully completed, there is an opportunity for a didactic, hand-on portion with our instructors at the dental school (dates are variable).
- Objectives
- Review Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Pharmacology, indications and contraindications.
- Recognize potential risks and urban legends concerning nitrous oxide contamination, scavenging and environmental exposure.
- Bust some of the myths around local anesthesia and how sedation can improve local anesthesia success.
- Know the seven medications you need to have in your emergency kit and how to use them.
- Understand current regulations specific to your particular Province or State.
